Rep. Javi Pushes for the Creation of a Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence

Negros Occidental Third District Representative Javier Miguel Benitez urged the House of Representatives to create a Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure the responsible development, governance, and integration of AI technologies in the country, July 14. “I filed this resolution because I believe the Philippines can lead with conscience and innovation in the age of AI. Let’s shape the future before it shapes us," Rep. Javi Benitez wrote in his social media post. The House Resolution seeks to position the Philippines as a proactive participant in the global AI landscape by crafting policies that reflect the nation's cultural identity, constitutional values, and development aspirations. It stresses the need to confront ethical, legal, and societal implications of AI, such as data privacy and human rights, labor market disruption and education reform, AI’s role in health care, national security, and agriculture, and digital governance and environmental sustainability. Consequently, the proposed Special Committee on AI will be tasked to formulate a national strategy, evaluate international models, recommend policies and laws, promote digital inclusion, and foster collaboration. Rep. Javi is a known advocate for digital transformation and youth empowerment. Thus, the resolution exemplifies a bold and forward-thinking action to safeguard the country’s digital future. *
