He cited new research showing that emissions from just five top oil and gas companies between 2015 and 2025 are projected to cause over $5 trillion in global damages, far beyond what developing countries can bear alone. “Filipinos have paid enough. It is time the world’s biggest polluters do the same,” he wrote. He emphasized that the proposed Climate Accountability Act (CLIMA Bill), a first-of-its-kind measure in the Global South, would require fossil fuel giants that exceed emission thresholds to contribute to a reparations fund that directly supports climate-impacted Filipino communities.
